On Monday, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth was not only trending on Twitter but in various parts of Bangalore, as his fans celebrated his 62nd birthday.
For Rajini Murugan, a diehard Rajini fan for 25 years, Monday was a special day packed with memorable action from morning to evening. Karnataka State Rajini Seva Samithi, the NGO Murugan launched to help poor and downtrodden, distributed 101 sarees to poor women and about 500 notebooks to students of the corporation school in Gavipuram, where Rajinikanth studied.

“We had a special pooja in his name at Gavi Gangadhara temple in the morning. Later we distributed sweets to several thousand people,” explained Murugan who has acted with Rajini in his blockbuster movie Sivaji. On December 14, the association will also distribute tricycles to the differently-abled at the Town Hall.
The Karnataka State Rajinikanth Fans Welfare Association prayed for his good health and engaged in social work. The association’s advisor Praveen M S said, “We arranged for food at the Infant Jesus Orphanage in Cox Town for 100 students. A menu of pulao and sweets brought light and happiness on the faces of students.”
The superstar’s cut outs were garlanded in front of theatres in various parts of the city. Rajini fans in the city plan to be a part of a big birthday bash for the star in Chennai on Tuesday.

TRENDS ON TWITTER
Twitter and Facebook went viral with fans wishing “Dear birthday, happy Rajinikanth to you” -- exemplifying Rajinikanth’s superhero status. Rajini clearly overshadowed the birthday celebrations of cricketer Yuvraj Singh.
“Now you know birthdays don’t really make you a superhero. It’s just within him -- Rajini sir rocks,” Arun P posted on his Facebook wall.
“Happy birthday to the one and only Rajinikanth ... There was one and there will be none like him. We are blessed to be in the same planet he lives in!” Yasmeen tweeted.
Happy Birthday, Rajinikanth: five reasons why you rock

Rajinikanth is many things, but above all, real. In his interviews, he neither plays the lofty thespian a la Amitabh Bachchan nor the super-cool kid like Shah Rukh Khan.

‘Rajini thanks me for flogging him’

R Sathyanarayana Rao the elder brother of Rajinikanth, recalled about the actor’s ‘mischievous’ side.

"Rajani was very mischievous in his childhood. However, while working as a BMTC conductor he turned alcoholic. One day, upset over this I flogged him. Later I felt very bad. But today he proudly says that because of that flogging, he has become Rajini. On every birthday, I call him
up and wish him."

Several websites wrongly display that Rajinikanth’s birthdate is in March, according to Rao. He said that Rajani was born on December 12, 1950, at 9:45 pm. Next year it turns out to be yet another big day for Rajani as his birthday falls on 12-12-12. His family members and fans in Bangalore plan a mega celebration on this occasion.

Dhoni wishes Yuvraj, Rajinikanth on their birthdays

Chennai: India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Monday wished teammate Yuvraj Singh and actor Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, both of whom are celebrating their birthdays.

"I wish them the very best on their birthdays. Yuvraj has done well and credited himself superbly in all formats of the game", said Dhoni.

"Rajini Sir is from South India and he is one of the leading actors (in the country) and has also achieved laurels in his field. I wish both of them", said Dhoni before his team's departure to Australia for the four-match Test series, starting later this month.

Yuvraj, who turned 30 today, is currently not a part of the national cricket team as he has been recovering from non-malignant tumour in his lung. The left-hander, however, is targeting his return to international cricket during the tri-series in Australia, to be held from February 2012.

Yuvraj, who was adjudged Man-of-the-Tournament for his brilliant performance in the ICC World Cup that India won earlier this year, made his first appearance for the country in 2000 and since then has played in 274 ODIs, 37 Tests and 23 Twenty20 Internationals.

Rajinikanth turned 62 and is recuperating from a kidney ailment.
