Madhya Pradesh who was shot and killed recently, joined the unfortunate list of seventeen other known cases of RTI activists who have suffered the same fate over the last couple of years.

Bhopal:
Madhya Pradesh Governor, Ramnaresh Yadav on Monday expressed grief over the untimely death of Ayazuddin, the son of Member of Parliament and former captain of Indian cricket team, Mohammed Azharuddin, last week.

Mishra, regional officer, MPPCB, said, "We have written to the director, health services, to hold a meeting with health officials in the city to follow rules and regulations of bio-medical waste management. We have been intimating hospitals to dispose medical waste through incinerator method. While many hospitals have accepted, still there are some left. Such hospitals will soon go for it."

According to rules, all hospitals and nursing homes have to segregate bio-medical waste into different containers/bags as per the prescribed colour code. However, reports suggest some hospitals and health-care centres in the division do not comply with the norms.

According to the MPPCB records, there are nearly 400 hospitals registered with the board, out of which more than 290 hospitals are from Indore. The health department has a tie-up with a private company to dispose the biomedical waste from hospitals. An incinerator plant having the capacity to dispose of 250 kg waste at one time has been set up at Sanwer industrial area. From the registered hospitals, about 270 to 330 tonne biomedical waste is generated every month.

About 900 to 1,100 kg waste is generated every day from the Indore and its nearby districts. Though the state government has set aside budget for biomedical waste disposal, a lot needs to be done and checked at remote level. Dr Sharad Pandit, chief medical and health officer, said, "In remote areas, where transportation facilities are not available, problem of collecting waste is still a concern for the department. We have tied up with a company on public private partnership basis and instructions have been given to officers at primary health care centres to follow rules." In areas where transport facility is not available, we have asked health care workers to adopt deep burial method, he added.

In the condolence message to Azharuddin, the Governor said he stood with the grief-stricken family in this moment of great sorrow.

Ayazuddin succumbed to injuries on September 16 after battling for life in a hospital at Hyderabad following a fatal bike accident.
