If you are aiming to be a bank employee, take up the Common Written Examination (CWE) conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and approved by the Indian Banks Association.

In order to reduce time and hassles in the recruitment process of its personnel, the Indian Banking Association has initiated a common national level entrance test for 19 public sector banks. The test will be held twice a year and at two levels, Clerical and Officers.

A candidate can attend bank interviews for any of the 19 banks, based on the scorecard issued by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). This is a major advantage for candidates, as they need not pay numerous examination fees to apply for various bank examinations. Expenses related to attending the various tests can also be saved.

It is estimated that approximately 65 per cent employees of Public Sector Undertaking Banks are going to retire during 2012-2013. That means, these banks will need about five lakh employees during the said period. Further, the banking sector has considerably expanded with the opening up of 25,000 new bank branches all over India, which will need an additional 2.5 lakh personnel. Thus, in all 7.5 lakh jobs have to be created before 2014. Therefore, this is the right time for bank job aspirants to find employment through the CWE.

At present, the CWE has notified clerical level jobs. Applications are to be submitted online only. The last date for submission is September 24, 2011 and the date of examination is on November 27, 2011. The test is to be held in 112 cities across the country. In Karnataka there are five examination centres: Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Gulbarga, Mangalore and Belgaum.

In order to be eligible for the CWE, the candidate must have scored a minimum of 60 per cent in Class 10 or 55 per cent in 10+2, or must have a degree from any recognised university. He/ she should be between 18-28 years of age as on August 1, 2011.

However, there is age relaxation of five years for SC candidates, three years for OBC candidates, ten years for disabled candidates and five years for ex-servicemen. The examination fee for general candidates is Rs. 350 and for SC/ST/PWD candidates it is Rs. 50 only. The fee can be paid through National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) or online or internet banking.

As the submission/registration for CWE is online, the candidate should keep the e_receipt/NEFT challan, scanned photograph and signature and personal email ID, before applying.

The syllabus for the clerical cadre CWE covers five subjects and will be divided into:
*Test of Reasoning (50 marks),
*Test of English Language (25 marks),
*Aptitude Test (50 marks),
*Awareness (with special reference to the Banking Industry — 50 marks), and
*Test of Computer Knowledge (50 marks)

For each wrong answer one fourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. The descriptive paper will be evaluated only after a candidate secures the minimum qualifying marks.
