Google on Saturday paid tribute to Jim Henson The doodle is a collaboration between Google and The Jim Henson Company

New Delhi: Google on Saturday paid tribute to Jim Henson, one of the greatest puppeteers of all time and the creator of the popular Muppets with a doodle featuring a series of digital puppets shaped in the form of the company logo.

James Maury Henson would have been 75 years of age on Saturday had he been alive. He is best known for ‘The Muppets’ and memorable shows such as Sesame Street, The Muppet Show and films such as The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper.

The Henson doodle features six digital muppets in the shape and colour of the Google logo that respond to a mouse over as ‘real’ muppets would.

The doodle is a collaboration between Google and The Jim Henson Company. The Google Doodle team tweeted: “Become a digital puppeteer today and tomorrow with our homepage tribute to Jim Henson! #googledoodle”

The official Google blog said “We’re thrilled to share this guest post by Brian Henson about his father - puppeteer, director and producer Jim Henson, best known as the creator of the Muppets. For the next 36 hours, we’re honoring Jim’s birthday on our homepage with a special doodle created in tandem with The Jim Henson Company.”

Brian Henson, Chairman of The Jim Henson Company, reminisced about his father in the touching post that threw valuable insight into the man behind the puppets. ”When we were kids, my brother and sisters and I were always allowed to stay up late to watch our father’s appearances on The Tonight Show or The Ed Sullivan Show. No matter how late it was or how young we were, my mother would wake us up and trundle us down to the living room television. We’d be giddy—like Christmas. When he came home, he’d head down to the garage where he had a workshop, and repair everything that we broke while he was away—or build a dollhouse for one of my sisters. Jim never stopped making things.”

Shoaib Akhtar gets as controversial as he can Sachin and Dravid don’t know the art of finishing the game

Shoaib Akhtar during the release of his book, in New Delhi, on Friday. (PTI)

Calcutta/New Delhi: Controversies have always been a part of Shoaib Akhtar’s cricketing career. Be it chucking, ball tampering or doping, the Pakistan fast bowler has been involved in every aspect that is considered illegal in the sport.

He hasn’t missed an opportunity to make sensational headlines and has remained the same even after retiring from international cricket.

In his latest act, he has questioned the abilities of two of the greatest batsmen in the game’s history, India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, to promote his autobiography.

In his book, launched in New Delhi on Friday, Shoaib says they do not know “the art of finishing the game”.

[According to a late night report, Sachin declined to comment on Shoaib’s remarks. “It is below my dignity to react to Shoaib’s comment,” he was quoted as saying by television channels.]

He has also admitted to ball tampering and that almost all Pakistani fast bowlers are involved in it.

The following are excerpts from his book and what he said during a media session

Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid

On Sachin Tendulkar

Vivian Richards, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara and the likes of them are great batsmen who dominated with the bat and were truly match-winners. Initially, when I bowled against Sachin, I found these qualities missing. He might have had more runs and records, he lacked the ability to finish the game.

I remember the 2006 home series against India…. What went in our favour was that Sachin was suffering from tennis elbow! This severely handicapped the great batsman. We managed to psychologically browbeat him. We bounced the ball at him and were able to unnerve him. I returned to the dressing room that first day with the knowledge that Sachin was not comfortable facing fast and rising ball. I bowled (Sachin) a particularly fast ball which he, to my amazement, didn’t even touch. He walked away! That was the first time, I saw him walk away from me — that, too, on the slow track at Faisalabad. It got my hunting instincts up and in the next match I hit him on the head and he couldn’t score after that.

I think players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid weren’t exactly match winners to start with, nor did they know the art of finishing the game.

On Rahul Dravid

There were only one or two guys in the Indian team who had to carry their bat... Their responsibility was to win a match or score a hundred in every game… Unfortunately, there wasn’t a finisher… I mean I have seen the Chennai Test match in 1999… Sachin was needed there, and then the Calcutta Test match… But I did not see him finish the match. As for Dravid, he could cruise with the bat… He had improved his game for the ODI format and had only started winning matches for India with the help of Gambhir, Sehwag and Yuvraj… I mean these are the guys who have won the matches…

Ball tampering

Almost all Pakistani fast bowlers have tampered with the ball. I may be the first one to openly admit it but everybody is doing it… To be honest, every team in the world tampers with the ball. We probably started it but today koi team doodh ki dhooli nahin hain. That is the only way to survive because the wickets are so slow.

If he was involved in ball tampering

I remember it being very hot and humid in Dambulla (in a tri-series after the 2003 World Cup) and as is customary with the pitches of the subcontinent, it was an awfully slow track. We were playing New Zealand, we needed a result... Out of desperation, I began fussing with the ball. Yes, for those of you who want to know, I did tamper with the ball in that match. I have tampered with the ball on many occasions. Have been warned several times and even being caught twice — Dambulla was one such instance.

If any other player was involved

I won’t name him but one Pakistani cricketer actually switched the ball in the umpires’ pocket with one that reversed like crazy. Umpires usually keep the ball in their coat pockets and then hang their coat up for lunch. That was when the transfer occurred. After this incident, they now leave their coats in a locked room.

Ways of doctoring the ball

There are so many ways to prepare the ball; it’s not just a matter of scratching it. I have used my boot nails and zip of my back pocket. Many bowlers use vaseline or gum on the ball.

On Shah Rukh Khan and IPL

I openly say this now… I reckon that IPL incident… The Board was paying money to the people, and that too a chunk of money, not to play in the ICL. I said that I don’t want any money and I came to meet Lalit Modi in Mumbai and Shah Rukh Khan was also present at the meeting…

They obviously convinced me to join IPL… Sourav (Ganguly) wanted me badly in the team because Sourav knows my potential. So I did join the Knight Riders. At that point of time, I had a better offer from the ICL… But I can tell you that I sacrificed a lot of money… Shah Rukh and I spoke about me not being happy with the money. But they got me to agree. I should have never listened to them… I left that money for Shah Rukh… But he has a wrong perception about me… that I am flamboyant, yeh ladai, jhagra, yeh oh… I don’t know…

For the record

Mohandas Menon, The Telegraph’s statistician, has worked out Shoaib Akhtar’s record against Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. Here goes:

Tests

Shoaib vs Sachin — In 9 Tests, Ind won 3, Pak won 3, Draw 3 (Has been dismissed 3 times by Shoaib)

Shoaib vs Dravid — In 10 Tests, Ind won 3, Pak won 3, Draw 4 (Has been dismissed 4 times by Shoaib)

ODIs
Shoaib vs Sachin — In 19 ODIs, Ind won 10, Pak won 9 (Has been dismissed 5 times by Shoaib)

Shoaib vs Dravid — In 23 ODIs, Ind won 8, Pak won 15 (Has been dismissed 5 times by Shoaib)

Jagjit Singh suffers brain haemorrhage, critical

Mumbai: Renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh suffered brain haemorrhage on Friday and is in a critical state, doctors attending to him said.

He was immediately rushed to the Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra where a life-saving surgery was performed on him, according to hospital sources.

Singh (70) is under observation, they said.

The ghazal maestro was to perform at a concert in the city today. His wife Chitra Singh is with him in the hospital.

Jagjit Singh was scheduled to perform Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi ghazals at a concert with fellow maestro from Pakistan Ghulam Ali at Shanmukhananda auditorium in Friday.

A representative of the Fever Entertainment which is organizing the ‘Fever unplugged concert’ told a private news agency, “Owing to the sudden hospitalization of Jagjit Singh, singer Hariharan is performing in his place.”

Jagjit Singh was born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. He had four sisters and two brothers and he is known as Jeet by his family.

Popularly known as "The Ghazal King" he gained acclaim together with his wife, another renowned Indian ghazal singer Chitra Singh, in the 1970s and 1980s, as the first ever successful duo act (husband-wife) in the history of recorded Indian music.

His popular ghazals include, Meri zindagi kisi aur ki, mere naam ka koi aur hai, Apni marzi se kahan apne safar ke hum hain, Wo jo hum mein tumme qaraar tha, Patta-patta boota-boota haal hamaara jaane hai, Hoshwalo ko khabar, etc.

He has also sung for popular movies like Sarfarosh and Tarqeeb.

Well-known ghazal singer Jagjit Singh was Friday admitted to the Lilavati Hospital here following suspected brain haemorrhage, an official source said.

The hospital authorities remained tight-lipped about the exact nature of his medical condition and its seriousness.

However, many of his friends and admirers have taken to micro blogging site Twitter to update about his condition.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar tweeted: “mujhe abhi pata chala hai ki hum sab ke priya ghazal singer Jagjit Singhji ko brain hemorrhage hua hai aur woh hospital me hai, main ishwar se prarthana karti hu ki wo jald acche ho jaaye, aur aap sab bhi unke liye prarthana ki jiye .... (I have just come to know that our favourite ghazal singer Jagjit Singhjji had a brain hemorrhage and he is in hospital. I will pray for his fast recovery and all of you should also pray for him.)”

Former cricket captain Saurav Ganguly posted: “Heard about Jagjit Singh, he got sudden brain hemorage.. Pray for legendary Ghazal Singer.”

Actor Aftab Shivdasani wrote: “Lets all pray for Jagjit Singhji's health...He is critical at Lilavati hospital.. May god oversee this and allow mercy to him.”

Known as 'Ghazal King' of India, Jagjit Singh, 70, and his wife Chitra are considered the pioneers of modern ghazal singing in the country.

Jagjit Singh was supposed to jam with Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali at Fever Unplugged Concert.

“Jagjitji had to perform today at the concert, but then he fell ill and was hospitalised. The organisers roped in Hariharan at the last moment and he performed with Ghulam Ali," said a source.

Mumbai, Dec 15 : Tigmanshu Dhulia's much talked about film 'Sahib biwi aur gangster', which was shot across virgin locations of Gujarat, completed its 30 day back-to back-shoot.

Produced by Brandsmith and Tigmanshu Dhulia Films, the film stars Jimmy Shergill, Randeep Hooda, Mahie Gill, Deepal Shaw, Vipin Sharma, Shreya Narain, Deepraj Rana and Mukesh Tyagi in pivotal roles.

Noted cinematographer Aseem Mishra shot the film on Alexa camera.

"Results have been great and the camera has been behaving well. I tested the camera and thought that it was best suited for this film, "said Aseem Mishra."The real time high defination monitoring and super 35 sensor compares well to 35 mm camera."

Tigmanshu Dhulia and Rahul Mittra, CEO Brandsmith and producer of the film were very happy with the shoot.

"Logistics was a major issue as we were shooting in the middle of nowhere, but my entire crew worked very hard and the actors have performed brilliantly. As time was a constraint, all major occasions were celebrated on location including Jimmy Shergill's birthday," said Rahul Mittra, visibly exhausted after a month-long hectic schedule.

"The audience is going to love the look of the film and the actors, especially Jimmy and Randeep. I am sure the hard work put in by everybody is going to be rewarded," added Mittra, who is aiming for a summer 2011 release.

"We look like a mess. Some of the actors have swollen faces and lips due to bee stings. These will obviously show on camera, more so since we're using a very sophisticated camera, the Alexa, for the first time in Indian cinema," said Dhulia, who had to face the wrath of honey bees while shooting.

Pakistan denies its intelligence agency supports the Haqqani network

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, left, and Adm. Michael Mullen testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Pakistan denies its intelligence agency supports the Haqqani network
  • Pakistan says to stop the allegations or "you will lose and ally"
  • "The Haqqani network ... acts as a veritable arm of Pakistan's intelligence," Mullen says
  • "The insurgency has been turned back in much" of Afghanistan, Panetta says

Washington (CNN) -- A Pakistan-based terrorist group that is actively attacking American troops across the border in Afghanistan is an "arm" of the Pakistani intelligence agency, the top U.S. military officer told Congress on Thursday.

The blunt accusation from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen, reflected the growing impatience of U.S. officials with Pakistan's unwillingness to stop the attacks and the belief that Pakistan is actively supporting the insurgents.

But the recent high profile attacks by insurgents in Afghanistan represent a shift in strategy by the Taliban, who have ceded control of territory in much of the country, the U.S. secretary of defense said Thursday.

"The insurgency has been turned back in much of the country, including its heartland in the south, and Afghan National Security Forces are increasingly strong and capable," Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said in a Senate Armed Service Committee hearing.

The attacks, including last week's attempt to strike at the NATO headquarters and the U.S. Embassy in Kabul and this week's assassination of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was leading efforts for reconciliation talks, have raised questions about the ability of Afghan security forces to maintain control.

But Panetta, testifying to the committee along with Mullen, said the Taliban strikes are a sign of weakness.

"We judge this change in tactics to be a result of a shift in momentum in our favor and a sign of weakness in the insurgency," Panetta said.

He said many challenges remain.

"We must be more effective in stopping these attacks and limiting the ability of insurgents to create perceptions of decreasing security," he told the committee in his opening statement.

The chairman of the committee, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Michigan, said the ability of the Haqqani network, a Pakistani militant group accused of being responsible for last week's Kabul attack and numerous others in which U.S. and NATO troops have died, to launch attacks over the border from Pakistan is unacceptable. Levin expressed frustration with the Pakistani government, which has yet to use its troops to crack down on the insurgents and has not publicly condemned the attacks in Afghanistan, either.

Mullen, appearing for the last time in front of the committee before his retirement at the end of the month, spoke candidly about concerns about the threat posed by the Haqqanis.

Pakistan is "exporting" violence to Afghanistan, he said.

"The Haqqani network, for one, acts as a veritable arm of Pakistan's intelligence," Mullen said.

He said Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency supported the Haqqani insurgents who planned and executed the attack on the U.S. Embassy and other strikes in Afghanistan. In doing so, Mullen said, the agency is jeopardizing Pakistan's relations with the United States and Afghanistan. But he added that the solution is not to give up on Pakistan and said a flawed relationship is better than no relationship.

Mullen has spent a significant amount of time during his chairmanship building relations with the Pakistanis.

"Some say I have wasted my time," Mullen said, but he disagrees, saying the situation would be far worse if not for U.S.-Pakistan relations.

In recent meetings between U.S. and Pakistani officials, including Mullen with the top Pakistani military officer and CIA Director David Petraeus with Pakistani's top intelligence officer, the United States has pushed Pakistan to crack down on the Haqqani network, Panetta said. Given the public nature of Thursday's hearing, Panetta would not discuss what further steps the United States is willing to take to stop the attacks, but a U.S. official said this week that the CIA has increased drone strikes against the insurgent network within Pakistan.

In Pakistan, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry denied that ISI supports the Haqqani insurgent group, brushing aside the U.S. categorization of the connection as "perceptions."

In a press briefing held in Islamabad on Thursday, spokesman Tahmina Junjua said Pakistan is not helping the Haqqani network.

Replying to a question on whether Pakistan is involved in a proxy war in Afghanistan, Junjua said, "I would say a categoric no."

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said Friday that the accusations coming out of Washington are unacceptable to Pakistan.

"You will lose an ally," Khar said on GEO TV. "You cannot afford to alienate Pakistan. You cannot afford to alienate the Pakistani people."

Members of Congress have raised the idea of cutting back on the billions of dollars in aid given to Pakistan. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said the Senate Appropriations Committee has placed conditions on counterterrorism aid, including that the secretary of state must certify that Pakistan is cooperating in U.S. efforts against the Haqqani network and other terrorist groups.

Panetta differs with the State Department on whether that is a fair condition, but said he does support the message it will send.

"Anything that makes clear to them that we cannot tolerate their providing this kind of safe haven to the Haqqanis, and that they have to take action, any signal we can send to them I think would be important to do," he said.

The top Republican on the committee, Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, called for slowing down the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan to maintain the advantage of the surge of troops added last year.

Mullen said there is "increased risk" in pushing ahead with the withdrawal of 10,000 troops by next summer, as announced by President Obama.

"While the risk is up, I think it is manageable," and military success can still be sustained, he said.

McCain pressed Panetta on whether the Rabbani assassination shows the Taliban has no interest in reconciliation.

"It does raise concerns. It raises suspicions. Nevertheless, I think, obviously, we have to continue to try to pursue the opportunities that are out there. But we ought to do it with our eyes open," Panetta said. "The best signal we can send to the Taliban is that we're going to continue to fight them and that we're going to continue to be there, and that we're not going anywhere. And if we can send them that clear signal, I think that, more than anything, would influence their willingness to develop reconciliation."

The top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, believes Taliban fighters in Afghanistan are upset and frustrated, Mullen said.

With "their leadership parked in Pakistan," Allen sees "the fighters on the field in Afghanistan are more and more disgruntled. Their morale is down," Mullen explained.

Regarding Iraq, Panetta said the United States continues to negotiate over any presence of American troops in that country after 2011. Currently, all U.S. troops will be withdrawing from the country, in accordance with the existing agreement with Iraq.

"No final decisions have been made," Panetta said.

Iraq has expressed a desire to maintain U.S. trainers and other aid going forward, he noted, to help them deal with security threats.

"I want to be clear that any future security relationship with Iraq will be fundamentally different from the one that we have had since 2003. The United States wants a normal, productive relationship and close strategic partnership with a sovereign Iraqi government going forward," Panetta said. "This kind of security assistance would be a means of furthering our strategic partnership with Iraq that looks to the kind of future role that can best address Iraqi security needs."

McCain urged that the United States not abandon Iraq and "not withdraw from Iraq as irresponsibly" as the Obama administration accused the the Bush government of being when the war was started.

Panetta and Mullen also warned about cutting too much from the defense budget. If Congress cannot come to an agreement on further spending cuts, an additional $500 million in defense spending would be cut.

Mullen said too harsh a cut would have a "good chance of breaking" the military.

"We are not going to solve the debt problem on the back of the Pentagon," he warned.

Panetta was equally emphatic in arguing against further cuts beyond the $350 billion the Pentagon has already committed to over the next 10 years.

"If we pulled that trigger would we be shooting ourselves in the foot," asked Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina.

"We'd be shooting ourselves in the head," Panetta said.

IBPS Clerk Recruitment bank job is just an exam away 2011

If you are aiming to be a bank employee, take up the Common Written Examination (CWE) conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and approved by the Indian Banks Association.

In order to reduce time and hassles in the recruitment process of its personnel, the Indian Banking Association has initiated a common national level entrance test for 19 public sector banks. The test will be held twice a year and at two levels, Clerical and Officers.

A candidate can attend bank interviews for any of the 19 banks, based on the scorecard issued by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). This is a major advantage for candidates, as they need not pay numerous examination fees to apply for various bank examinations. Expenses related to attending the various tests can also be saved.

It is estimated that approximately 65 per cent employees of Public Sector Undertaking Banks are going to retire during 2012-2013. That means, these banks will need about five lakh employees during the said period. Further, the banking sector has considerably expanded with the opening up of 25,000 new bank branches all over India, which will need an additional 2.5 lakh personnel. Thus, in all 7.5 lakh jobs have to be created before 2014. Therefore, this is the right time for bank job aspirants to find employment through the CWE.

At present, the CWE has notified clerical level jobs. Applications are to be submitted online only. The last date for submission is September 24, 2011 and the date of examination is on November 27, 2011. The test is to be held in 112 cities across the country. In Karnataka there are five examination centres: Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Gulbarga, Mangalore and Belgaum.

In order to be eligible for the CWE, the candidate must have scored a minimum of 60 per cent in Class 10 or 55 per cent in 10+2, or must have a degree from any recognised university. He/ she should be between 18-28 years of age as on August 1, 2011.

However, there is age relaxation of five years for SC candidates, three years for OBC candidates, ten years for disabled candidates and five years for ex-servicemen. The examination fee for general candidates is Rs. 350 and for SC/ST/PWD candidates it is Rs. 50 only. The fee can be paid through National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) or online or internet banking.

As the submission/registration for CWE is online, the candidate should keep the e_receipt/NEFT challan, scanned photograph and signature and personal email ID, before applying.

The syllabus for the clerical cadre CWE covers five subjects and will be divided into:
*Test of Reasoning (50 marks),
*Test of English Language (25 marks),
*Aptitude Test (50 marks),
*Awareness (with special reference to the Banking Industry — 50 marks), and
*Test of Computer Knowledge (50 marks)

For each wrong answer one fourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. The descriptive paper will be evaluated only after a candidate secures the minimum qualifying marks.
IBPS Clerk recruitment 2011 is advertised through the official website. IBPS recruitment 2011 Clerk announced officially. IBPS CWE Clerk recruitment 2011 announced for 19 Public Sector Banks from the official website.

I wasn’t uncomfortable with bold scenes – Vidya Balan
She is at her boldest ever in “The Dirty Picture”, but actress Vidya Balan says she never felt a sense of discomfort shooting for the movie as she was in the “trusted hands” of director Milan Luthria.

Vidya Balan Hot The Dirty Picture“I have never enjoyed being a woman more than I did while shooting for ‘The Dirty Picture’. I wasn’t uncomfortable doing bold scenes because I knew I was in trusted hands,” Vidya told reporters here Tuesday.

Mausam: Shahid and Sonam waltz

Mausam: Shahid and Sonam waltz

Mausam is the kind of movie that has everything: superlative performances, beautiful cinematography, fantastic direction, great background score and an interesting story. However, it falls short in one area – the plot. And that’s what turns what could have been an outstanding movie into one that’s simply good, with a few moments that really shine.

The film is about a Punjabi boy (Harry) and a Kashmiri girl (Aayat), whose story is a series of meetings and separations that occur in context of real-life events – such as the 9/11 attacks and the Gujarat riots.

Mausam: Innocent love at its best

Mausam: Innocent love at its best

The first half of the movie showcases an old-world charm that makes you yearn for that time when things were so much simpler – I fell in love with the Punjab we saw through Pankaj Kapur’s eyes. The teenage antics, stolen glances and sweet smiles make for some very lovely scenes that portray innocent love at its best. In fact, that’s the best part of Mausam - it revives that concept of innocent love which has been lost throughout the series of rom-coms we’ve had lately. You will love the first proper exchange shared by the main characters – it’s soft, beautiful, and has an absolutely amazing background song to go along with it (which wasn’t on the album, unfortunately).

Mausam: Second half loses focus

Mausam: Second half loses focus

However, in the second half, the plot loses focus easily, making the film too long-winded. Pankaj Kapur should have left out some sub-plots from his script, because it just made the movie cumbersome and long. The final 15 minutes of the film were the worst, in my opinion; those scenes were unnecessary, way too cliche, and definitely should have been left out. That was my major gripe; ending aside, I quite liked the film.

Mausam: Amazing chemistry between the lead pair

Mausam: Amazing chemistry between the lead pair

Shahid Kapoor is phenomenal in Mausam. He plays the mischievous teenager so naturally, and easily transitions into the mature Air Force officer. His best performance by far – even surpassing that of Jab We Met. I believe it is also Sonam Kapoor’s best work; she looks perfect for the part of Aayat and has excelled in both her quiet scenes and her highly dramatic ones. Oh, and she is absolutely gorgeous in this film. Plus, the chemistry between these two is absolutely stunning – they look amazing together and it’s such a nice, fresh pairing that you sit up and take notice.

Mausam: Lovely cinematography

Mausam: Lovely cinematography

Pankaj Kapur’s direction is fabulous – he executes his scenes really, really well, and the beautiful cinematography just added to that. I’m mightily impressed with Pankaj Kapur the director and dialogue-writer, but not so much with Pankaj Kapur the scriptwriter.

In short: Watch – especially on the big screen. Recommended for the stellar performances, technical elements and those moments of brilliance; but beware, it can get a bit too long and dramatic.

Superstar cricketer and youngest captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi passed away in New Delhi after battling lung infection for a month Biography pictures

New Delhi, Sept 22 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) A royal era of Indian cricket came to an end on Thursday when the nation’s first superstar cricketer and youngest captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi passed away in New Delhi after battling lung infection for a month.
He was 70 and is survived by wife, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, and three children – daughters Soha and Saba and son Saif.
Pataudi was admitted at the Sir Gangaram Hospital here earlier this month and was in the intensive care unit (ICU)
Pataudi was born on Jan 5, 1941, played 46 Test matches for India between 1961 and 1975. He captained 40 of 46 Tests out which India won nine.
He was born in 1941 in Bhopal, to former India captain and the eighth Nawab of Pataudi, Iftikhar Ali Khan, who also played for England, and Sajida Sultan, second daughter of the last ruling nawab of Bhopal.
Cricket was always in Pataudi’s blood.
He spent his formative years at Welham Boys’ School in Dehradun and then went to England like his father to study at Lockers Park Prep School in Hertfordshire, Winchester College and Balliol College, Oxford.
A car accident permanently damaged vision in his right eye when he was only 20. This, however, did not affect his widely acclaimed playing skills and few month later he made his international debut.
He made his debut against England in 1961 and scored his maiden ton, a classy 103, in his third Test against England to set-up a 128-run win in Chennai. The innings earned him a berth for the Caribbean tour.
A nasty injury to Nari Contractor, who had to undergo a brain operation after being hit by a Charlie Griffith bouncer, changed Pataudi’s fortunes, who had to miss the first two Tests against the West Indies.
Pataudi, on March 23, 1962, at the age of 21 years and 79 days, became the youngest cricketer to captain any country in a Test match.
The good looking Pataudi made cricket look good as well. For him limited eyesight was never a handicap for him.
Pataudi’s highest, 203 not out, was against against one of the finest fast bowling attacks of Colin Cowdrey’s England at the Ferozeshah Kotla here in his 10th Test match in 1964.
His looks earned his a great female fan following and it was no surprise that one of them was Bollywood star Sharmila Tagore.
After a four-year courtship, they finally tied the knot in 1969 after Sharmila converted to Islam and took the name of Ayesha Sultana. They had three children- Saif , Saba and Soha.
While Saif Ali Khan is one of the hottest Indian actors, his sister Soha Ali Khan also made her mark in films. Saba is a jewellery designer by profession.
Many felt the marriage won’t last long but only death separated them.
“I haven’t given up anything (after marrying Tiger). He is very liberal in his views. I’ve gained a lot of experience and gained another culture, cuisine, and way of dressing. I’ve benefited a lot,” Sharmila once said in an interview.
Pataudi retired from international cricket in 1975 after playing 46 Test matches and scored 2,793 runs at an average of 34.91.
He dabbled in politics, was the cricket team’s manager in 1974-75 and was also an International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee for a brief period and a member of IPL Governing Council.
But his great life was scarred after he was arrested for killing a blackbuck in Jhajjar in 2005. He spent few days in jail before being released on bail.
Pataudi, however, had a larger than life image in Indian cricket and connected the young generation with the past.
“It is a terrible loss to the cricketing world. I had the privilege of meeting him on a few occasions. World cricket will miss a hero like him. I really respected him,” said Sachin Tendulkar.
Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar tweeted; “mansur ali khan pataudi was a real star of indian cricket..even, long after he had retired…we will miss him ! RIP.”
Yuvraj Singh tweeted, “You were always a tiger !! India has lost one of the best captains ever ! Rest in piece ! Respect”.
New BCCI President N Srinivasan also expressed his condolences on Pataudi’s death.
“I am shocked to hear the news of Tiger Pataudi’s demise. He was an exemplary individual, who guided Indian cricket to unprecedented heights, as batsman, fielder and captain. He revolutionised fielding standards in the Indian team, and across the country.”
“In an age wherein a draw was considered as good as a win, Tiger Pataudi encouraged his players to go flat out for victory. He was an aggressive batsman who excelled in crisis situations, and showed the nation how to combat adversity. I join my colleagues in the BCCI to express my condolences at his passing away. His services to Indian cricket will never be forgotten”, wrote Srinivasan.

The death of Pataudi brought to an end indeed a royal chapter of Indian cricket. R.I. P, Tiger Pataudi.

With sadness we report the passing of Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Our thoughts are with the Pataudi Family – Saif, Soha, Saba and Shamila.

Legendary Indian cricketer Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi passed away on Thursday after battling a severe lung infection.

The hospital bulletin earlier on Thursday reported Pataudi’s condition as critical.

DNA brings to you the six best innings of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi's career

203* vs England

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi's best performance was against England in 1964 at Delhi. He scored 203 not out and became the first Indian to hit a double century against England.

Pataudi’s condition deteriorated since Wednesday as he was unable to maintain the oxygen level inspite of maximum treatment. He continued to remain in the ICU and a close watch was being kept on him. Pataudi’s condition took a turn for the worse last week.

The 70-year-old Pataudi was admitted to the hospital last month following severe lung infection.

After investigations, he was found to be suffering from interstitial lung disease, a condition in which the passage of oxygen to the two lungs is less than normal.

He was being closely monitored by a team of pulmonologists and critical care specialists, the bulletin said.

Pataudi, regarded as one of the finest Indian captains, played 46 Tests for the country, scoring 2,793 runs for an average of 34.91 with an unbeaten 203 being his highest score.

In all, he smashed six centuries and 16 fifties in his career.

153 vs. New Zealand

Skipper Pataudi crafted an innings of 153 runs against New Zealand in Kolkata on 5th March 1965.

The Kiwis at the Eden Garden posted a huge first innings score of 462 for 9 declared.

Even after Pataudi's commendable performance India managed only 380 all out in their first innings, giving New Zealand a lead of 82 runs.

The match ended in a draw.

148 vs. England

In a disastrous tour to England, the only thing to look out for was the manner in which Pataudi led the team from front.

In the opening Test at Headingley, Leeds Pataudi scored 148 against England 8th June 1967.

Azharuddin Bollywood mourns death son Bollywood World 2011

BHOPAL: This 'city of lakes' has a curious love affair with bikes, which unite the young and old. And while motorcycle-enthusiasts regret the bike accident which killed the son and nephew of former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin, they say their passion for their mean machines will not lessen a bit.

Bhopal, home to a two-time national champion in bike racing and nine participants of the popular biking reality show MTV Stuntmania, boasts of around a dozen superbikes.
The mean machines come in the price range of Rs.7 lakh-20 lakh, with brands like Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha starting to offer their latest models in the country.

Former Indian cricket captain and Lok Sabha member Mohammed Azharuddin's son Mohammed Ayazuddin, who was critically injured in a motorbike accident five days ago, passed away at a hospital here Friday.

The 19-year-old died at 11.51 a.m. due to hypoxic encephalopathy, said a statement from Apollo Hospital, where the youngster battled for life since Sunday.

The budding cricketer was critically injured in the super bike crash at Puppalaguda on Outer Ring Road of Hyderabad Sep 11. Ayazuddin's cousin Ajmal-ur-Rahman (16), who was pillion riding with him, died a couple of hours after they were taken to the hospital.

The high-end sports bike skidded off the road when Ayazuddin was riding it at a high speed, according to police.
Ayazuddin's mother Naureen, Azharuddin, his second wife Sangeeta Bijlani and other close relatives were at the hospital when the end came.

A pall of gloom descended on Azharuddin's house in Banjara Hills, where the body was later shifted. The burial is scheduled to take place in the evening.

Ayazuddin was the youngest of the two sons of Azharuddin from his first wife Naureen, whom he divorced to marry former actress Sangeeta Bijlani.

Doctors at Apollo Hospital said Ayazuddin was in critical condition and was put on a ventilator ever since he was shifted to the hospital. They said he was brought with cardiac arrest and sustained injuries to kidneys. But bikers say riding a superbike comes with its own set of challenges.

"While riding a superbike, one has to be careful as it can reach 100 kmph within seconds. But, then, that is the joy of riding them. Yes, initially, it needs training from professionals and one should wear the complete riding gear," Nura Khan, who has been riding superbikes for the past five years and is the proud owner of a Suzuki Hayabusa, said.

The 30-year-old's Hayabusa GSX 1300 R is more powerful than the GXS 1000 R which Azharuddin's son Mohammed Ayazuddin, 19, and his cousin Ajmal-ur-Rahman, 16, were riding in Hyderabad last week.

While Rahman, who was riding pillion, died on the spot when the bide skidded due to high speed, Ayazuddin died after battling for life for five days.

Khan said one has to be extra careful with superbikes due to the potent mix of speed and power.
"I ride the Hayabusa in the city during night hours and on highways. Otherwise, the crowds and condition of city roads are not conducive for such bikes," he said.

Zeeshan Khan, who was among the top five participants in this year's edition of MTV Stuntmania, said: "When I heard about Azharuddin's son's accident, I knew it was the rider's fault. A bike is a machine and it moves the way you want it to."

"I love my superbike and bike riding. If I am outside home, I miss my bike and when I return, even before meeting my family, I take my bike for a spin," said the 20-year-old, who owns a Honda CBR 600.

Another biker, Lucky, said motorcycle accidents involving youngsters only show the parents' carelessness, who hand out the powerful machines to inexperienced riders without thinking of the consequences.
Two-time national champion Muzaffar Ali, who started his career as a mechanic assembling bikes and taking part in races, said he is now looking to feature in the international circuit.
Bhopal's bikers are, in fact, gung-ho about the future.

Automobile engineer Nabeel Bari said: "Bike riding is not going to lessen in Bhopal. In fact, it will increase in the near future as motor sports is going to get a more prominent place in the Indian sports arena."

And he has two important tips for superbike-enthusiasts.

"While riding superbikes, two things should be taken care of. One, its throttle, because of high BHP (brake horsepower), can pick amazing speed. And, second, the handle of superbikes is longer than other bikes; so while turning, one has to be more cautious," Bari said.

IRCTC needs to be modernised, says Trivedi IRCTC Online Passenger Reservation System 2011

New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI) With frequent complaints about IRCTC services, Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi today expressed dissatisfaction with its functioning, saying the corporation needs to be modernised. "I am not happy with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, the way it is functioning. We had a meeting on IRCTC yesterday. The website of the IRCTC needs to be strengthened and modernised," Trivedi told reporters. There have been frequent complaints about IRCTC services including its catering service on board trains and its online passenger reservation system Railways have already divested the IRCTC, a PSU under it, from catering responsibility after recurring complaints about its service. The Minister informed that SIMRAN (Satellite Imaging Rail Navigation) system for tracking trains on real-time basis would be operational soon. Admitting the lack of basic amenities outside railway stations, Trivedi said he will write to all Chief Ministers and Mayors for improving the conditions outside stations. "We have plan for modernisation of stations to provide more facilities like restaurant, mall, bookstore, multiplex for passengers," he said. Trivedi said all rail land records would be digitalised. On railways social responsibility, he said "Out of 150 projects only 14 are financially viable. But all these projects are socially desirable. There are remote areas which are strategically important and need to be linked with rail." On public private participation (PPP) he said "we cannot move ahead without PPP. We have to have PPP. In 12th Plan one trillion dollars is reuired for infrastructure. and out of this 50 per cent is coming from private sector." He said each MP wants train stoppage and new train for his constituency

BHUBANESWAR: The Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a mini-Ratna PSU, on Tuesday inked an MoU with the Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) to promote tourist places in the State.

Sexism in the Labor Movement Tracy Lai, 54, first joined the American Federation of Teachers Union in 1984

Tracy Lai, 54, first joined the American Federation of Teachers Union in 1984. She was just out of graduate school and had landed a job at Seattle Central Community College. At the time, the movement was in the midst of a massive decline. What began as a slow bleed in 1950s had by the end of the 1980s become a critical wound. One that threatened its entire relevancy.

But Lai felt no trepidations about joining a union. She became immediately aware of the importance of understanding and negotiating contracts. And she says she was inspired by many in the movement, including a large community of incredibly strong women.

In the last two decades, union membership overall has continued to decline. Many argue one reason it has endured decades of union-busting and spates of anti-union policies such as “Right-to-Work” has been its ability to evolve. In particular, its ability to recruit women and immigrants into the fold. Yet today union leadership continues to reflect what the movement once was — white and male.

“In the labor movement that’s been the most heart-breaking part,” says Lai about sexism and gender equality.

“Here’s this movement that talks about social justice issues, issues of race and class. Yet we go about it in the same old way,” she said. “Yes there are more women and minorities, but it is still not enough. Even as we have tried to break earlier patterns. The worst part of the earlier pattern is there were no women in leadership positions. If that was the early part of it, and we kind of change that up a little bit by adding one woman union leader or one man of color even if the faces look a little different, we are all still going about the status quo.”

Lai describes changes in the labor movement as circular as opposed to real progress. And the lack of women in leadership positions is being only one of many tangible issues that speak to sexism in the movement. In order to really get passed issues of race and sex, there must be a fundamental change in the structure of the movement, she said.

“It’s hard to let go,” Lai said. “If you have the same leaders year after year, you are not adding new voices. It’s hard for people to step aside.”

Lai recently returned from a national conference which was ironically hosted by the Coalition of Labor Union Women. Being a delegate at this event was an honor and opportunity to meet new people. More importantly, it was an opportunity to weigh in on actionable goals that will be addressed throughout the year. Yet each year, each union sends the same small number of delegates. The same faces. With that structure, real change will be difficult, she said.

“That doesn’t lead to different outcomes because you aren’t hearing new voices,” she said. “In the end you have to ask yourself, how are we going to make the kind of difference that needs to be made?”

Since the passage of the Equal Pay Act in 1963, the wage gap between the genders has narrowed somewhat. After hovering at 60 percent, meaning women earned .60 for every male dollar, it rose to 70 percent by 1990. By 1997, it rose 75 percent. Yet in the last decade, it’s only risen one percentage point.

Yet, women union members fair much better. The wage gap between male and female union members is slimmer. Union members earn an average of $917 per week compared with $717 for nonunion members. Women union members earn nearly a third more than their nonunion counterparts, according to the National Women’s Law Center http.

Latina women, who earn the least of all demographic groups, earn 48 percent more than their nonunion counterparts. Black women earn 25.4 percent more than their nonunion counterparts.

Marlene Pedregosa, 56, is the current Secretary/Treasurer of the SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, Local 6, here in Seattle. She first got involved in the labor movement in 1990 and has been working for the SEIU full time for the last six years. She, too, believes sexism has been a very real part of the union story. But she feels a bit more optimistic about the future.

“As a woman you deal with things when you are in the labor movement. It’s there. Of course it’s there. It’s even here in the SEIU. But not as much because there are women in the SEIU rising in the ranks,” she said. “(The racism and sexism) came from the old school and their membership.”

One issue that speaks directly to how the “old school” way of thinking is changing, she says, has been the entrance of immigrants into the movement.

Just four years ago, many national unions were largely anti-immigrant saying immigrants were being used to suppress union wages and replace union workers. But things changed quickly once the AFL-CIO began organizing immigrant workers.

“When the AFL-CIO started to embrace immigrants, it forced the other unions to re-educate their membership,” she said. “In the beginning, there was a lot of push-back from other unions.”

In the end, immigrants started joining unions en masse. According to Pedregosa, a union is little more than the sum of its membership. As the unions become more diverse, as more women and women of color rise up the ranks, the less pervasive issues like sexism and racism will be.

“I really does all depend upon who your members are,” she said.

David Macpherson, an Economics Professor at the Florida State University, has studied unions for two decades. He says the fact that women have become a critical force in the labor movement is quite obvious if you look at where unions are growing and where they are shrinking.

For instance, SEIU has organized more than a million new members in the last decade. The majority of its membership are women and people of color. Back in 1996, more than half of its members were in local unions led by either a woman or people of color. By contrast, construction and trade unions, historically the least diverse, have all but disappeared.

“But It’s hard to say what’s more important to them, the gender or the sector,” he said. “In the end, I think all they really care about is getting more members.”

Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy investigate the alleged role of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum scam case.

NEW DELHI: The CBI has told the Supreme Court that it should not consider a petition by Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy, asking it to direct the agency to investigate the alleged role of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum scam case. Chidambaram was finance minister in 2008 when the alleged scam took place.

"The 2G spectrum scam is now outside the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court," CBI's counsel KK Venugopal told a bench comprising Justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly on Tuesday.

Venugopal said the trial in the case has commenced after filing of chargesheets and only the trial court has jurisdiction to decide whether a further probe against any person could be carried out.

The court passed no order, but appeared to counter the CBI's assertion that it had no right to order a CBI investigation because a chargesheet has been filed.

"The charges have not been framed. Trial starts from the date of the framing of the charges," the judges said. "The prayer of the applicant is not for a direction to investigate the case in a particular way. It is to direct the CBI to further investigate the case," Justice Ganguly said.

The proceedings before the Supreme Court witnessed a vigorous verbal tussle between Swamy and Venugopal. Swamy told the bench that there were four meetings between the then telecom minister A Raja and then finance minister Chidambaram, which, according to him, was proof that decisions on the allocation of 2G spectrum was taken together.

These meetings took place on January 30, 2008, May 29, 2008, June 12, 2008, and finally on July 4, 2008.

The minutes of the meetings on January 30, 2008, were missing. But details are now available through the trial court records, said Swamy, adding it was provided by the accused former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura.

When Swamy wanted to submit the documents to the apex court, Venugopal objected on procedural grounds and also because, according to him, they were irrelevant as the decision on the allocation of 2G licences was taken on January 8, 2008, by Raja. It had nothing to do with the case, CBI's lawyer argued.

Swamy also referred to the CAG report to buttress his case, claiming that the report had said that there was no difference of opinion between the telecom and the finance ministries. He also referred to the PAC report, saying it clearly "nailed" Chidambaram's role though it was not accepted by the parliament. Venugopal objected to Swamy's plea on the ground that the PAC report cannot be discussed before the court.

"In regard to all matters relating to 2G spectrum scam, the conspiracy and other offences, the investigation is complete and chargesheets have been filed. If the magistrate finds some issue to be probed it could ask the agency to do so under Section 173 of the criminal procedure code. In the alternative, if it finds any evidence against a person, it could summon him as an accused under section 319," said Venugopal, summing up his case.

Venugopal said he will cite several case laws on it to prove his point while Swamy said he would oppose it. The bench will resume its hearing on Wednesday.
